“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that we have the privilege to praise and thank You for all Your wonderful works. Lord, we observe the magnificent way in which You are preserving Your creation, even though we have done much harm to it. You are giving time for man to repent and turn to You but we are determined to go our own sinful ways. We fall before You in repentance. We pray that our tongues will be released to worship You for all Your wonderful works. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”
Acts 2:11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” From verses 9-11 of Acts 2, we see the list of places from where these devout Jews were gathered in Jerusalem, to celebrate Pentecost. This is what they said, “we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, our tongues are released to worship God and we explode in rejoicing and praise for who He is and for all His wonderful works. John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. (38) He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (39) But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
This experience of believing and being baptised with the Holy Spirit was to be a special experience, which the Lord would pour out on His people after He was glorified. This experience changes us to worship Him and declare all His wonderful works. This is what the Lord told the Samaritan woman, as to what would happen when she drinks from the water that He would give her. John 4:13-14 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, (14) but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The disciples were having the ‘fountain of water experience’. They were not able to restrain themselves for the Holy Spirit was bubbling forth from within them, bursting into the worship of God, for His wonderful works. They were rejoicing in the presence of God. They were the least concerned about what others might think, for they were lost in the adoration of God and His wonderful works. This was what this audience from different places, was witnessing.
Psalms 78:4-7 We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. (5) For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children; (6) That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children, (7) That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments; The wonderful works of God are that He has set up His testimony and Law in Israel. He has commanded that His ways must be made known to their children so that the next generation will make it known to their children after them. God’s purpose was that people should not forget God but live in obedience and surrender to His ways. This is His wonderful work for the Lord longs that man will remain in His habitat.
Psalms 107:8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! The Psalmist is saying that it is important to praise and thank the Lord for His wonderful works. This same exhortation is repeated in verses 15, 21, 31 of the same Psalm. Exodus 15:11 “Who is like You, O Lord among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? Moses and the people of Israel had experienced their deliverance from slavery. They had witnessed the wonderful works of God. This was their natural and spontaneous response to the wonderful works of God. As we consider the works of God in our lives, one by one, and turn them around to see how the Lord has manifested His wonderful works in our lives, we will not be able to stop praising and thanking Him for all His wonderful works. Psalms 26:7 That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, And tell of all Your wondrous works. When we stand before any audience, our tongues will not be tied up, but we will rejoice and tell of all His wonderful works.
Psalms 40:5 Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered. This is what was taking place at that time. The consequence was that this audience was impacted and they surrendered their lives to Christ. When the church begins to worship and thank the Lord for His wonderful works, because we are not able to restrain ourselves but our tongues are released to God, the people who hear us, will respond, and give their lives to Christ.
“The world will hear us speaking the wonderful works of God.”
