04 – 07Jun2022 – *God was with Jesus* - _Acts 01:01-05_ - THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - Bible reading: _Acts 10:36-38_
“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have promised us the filling of Your Holy Spirit. We can live for Jesus only in the fullness of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
*_Acts 1:1-2 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (2) until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,_*
We have considered the matter of Jesus being taken up and some of its implications for us, the church.
Let us now look at the next phrase, _ after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles_.
*_Isaiah 11:1-2 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. (2) The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD._*
Jesus came from the root of Jesse. The Spirit of God rested on Jesus. Jesus’ life was from the fullness of the Holy Spirit. If Jesus lived out His life and ministry out of the overflowing of the Holy Spirit then we too must long for the same experience. We must look up to Jesus for the overflowing of the Holy Spirit. Out of our flesh, we cannot please God. We need to hunger and thirst for the river of water of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus spoke about.
_John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "*If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. (38) He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (39) But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive*; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified._
Rivers of the living water of the Holy Spirit, flowing through us, is what will nourish and bless the lives of others.
Peter spoke in the home of Cornelius.
_Acts 10:36-38 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all— (37) that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: (38) how *God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him*.
Jesus went about doing good. *God was with Him*. This was the evidence of the anointing of the Holy Spirit that was on Jesus. There was harmony in His life, in both His actions and His words.
_Luke 4:18-21 *“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HAS ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR; HE HAS SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET AT LIBERTY THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED; (19) TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD."* (20) Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. (21) And He began to say to them, *"Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."*_
Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit and His life was to reconcile people to Himself.
How did the filling of the Holy Spirit happen to Jesus?
_Matthew 3:16-17 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, *the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. (17) And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased*."_
In _Acts 2_ the anointing of the Holy Spirit was like divided tongues of fire on the apostles. Whereas, the anointing of the Holy Spirit on Jesus was like a dove that alighted on Him. The anointing of the Holy Spirit happens in different ways.
The Lord gives the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
_John 3:34-35 For *He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure*. (35) The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand._
God the Father has given the fullness of the Holy Spirit to Jesus, and Jesus spoke words out of the fullness of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was given to Jesus, without measure.
The word of God is anointed by the Spirit of God. As we understand, assimilate and apply the word of God into our lives, it all happens by the work of the Spirit of God.
*Thought to ponder*
``` God’s purposes are accomplished by the baptism of the Holy Spirit.```
