23Mar2021 - *Marriage – They shall become one flesh* - _Luke 20:27-40_ - HE IS NOT THE GOD OF THE DEAD BUT OF THE LIVING 4 – Bible reading: _Genesis 2:23-24_

We now get into the question raised by the Sadducees. The Sadducees, as we understand, deny the resurrection. Here we see them raising a question to Jesus. The question seems as though it is related to marriage but the core issue within this question is resurrection.

They were trying to trap Jesus, as the earlier group of leaders tried to do. If they could get Jesus to somehow deny the resurrection, then it would strengthen and affirm their theological stand, of denying the resurrection.

_Luke 20:27-34 Then some of the *Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection*, came to Him and asked Him, (28) saying: "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. (29) Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. (30) And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. (31) Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. (32) Last of all the woman died also. (33) Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife." (34) Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage._

The question that these Sadducees asked Jesus was based on a precept given in the Old Testament. _Deuteronomy 25:5 “If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; her husband's brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her._

_(34) Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage._ This is how Jesus began His answer to their question.

Marriage is a relationship instituted by God. It is a special and unique relationship designed for *this age*. This phrase, *this age* would, immediately, throw up many questions in our hearts and minds.

We have a general idea of the next age but we do not pay much attention to the age which is to come, since we are overwhelmed with enough challenges in the present age. Our mind is immersed with the issues of this age

We will get into discussing the next age and very specifically about marriage in the next age since that is the question raised by these Sadducees.

Let us now understand marriage in this age.

_Genesis 2:23-24 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (24) Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh._

Adam was very clear with the understanding of the basis of marriage. The one-flesh experience is the foundational blessing of marriage. There is no other bond that can come close to this bond of a marriage relationship between a man and a woman, who has become his wife. The marriage that God set up, in the beginning, was always to be one man with one woman, who will be his wife.

Though we live in times when the institution of marriage has become fragile, yet people, with all sorts of persuasions and lifestyles, still consider marriage as a special relationship. This is because marriage is a relationship instituted by God, where one man with one woman, who becomes his wife, enter into a one-flesh experience.

This one flesh experience is blessed when both of them are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. _Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being._ It is the Holy Spirit, who enables and empowers them to bring the one flesh experience to be a reality.

This relationship of marriage, which we have just described, is a relationship that God set up for this age.

*Thought to ponder*

```Young people need to be taught and made to understand the one-flesh experience, as they prepare for marriage.```
