Luke 23 26-43 THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS 04 Luke 23 27-31 The pain of God’s heart
Tue 14 Dec 2021 – The pain of God’s heart - Luke 23:26-43 - THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS (04) - Bible reading: Genesis 6:5-6
The Lord’s heart for us is to see if we are concerned for the things that pain the heart of God. We, unfortunately, are more concerned about our own needs to be met.
The world is in a state of evil and wickedness. This is because we have rejected our Creator and the one who gives us the basis to live life. We have gone our own ways and this has led us to be where we are today, in such misery.
There are very few who stand in the gap, before God, to intercede, cry out, weep and lament for the sin of our people. There are very few who plead to God to forgive our nations and for man to repent and walk in the ways of God.
Luke 23:27-31 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. (28) But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. (29) For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!' (30) Then they will begin 'TO SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, "FALL ON US!" AND TO THE HILLS, "COVER US!" ' (31) For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?"
This is what took place as the Lord was going to be crucified. Simon was bearing His cross and was following Him.
Some multitudes followed Jesus and the larger portion of them were women, who mourned and lamented for Him. They were grieving because of all the physical, emotional and mental abuse that was being heaped on Jesus. They were feeling sad for Jesus.
The Lord’s response to these women was that they should not be troubled or sad for Him, but for themselves and their children.
What is the lesson for us?
The daughters of Jerusalem, represent the families and society in general. They are the ones who cement life in a culture and society. It is women who raise or else lower the character of a culture, society and nation. The foundational role of women, in building any society, is undeniable.
Jesus addressing women is crucial here for He is addressing the matter of the character of a culture. He is telling the women to be more worried and troubled about the state of society and not be sad for Him.
The Lord’s heart breaks that society has gone far away from God.
Genesis 6:5-6 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (6) And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
The Lord had created a beautiful creation. God had created man in Their own image and gave man the place to have dominion over all of God’s creation. It was all set up perfectly. God saw that it was all very good.
Yet, in a few chapters, we see that the state of God’s creation had reached such a terrible dilemma that God’s heart was grieved over all of His creation. He was sorry that He had made man on the earth.
Isaiah 48:17-18 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go. (18) Oh, that you had heeded My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
Today there is chaos all over the world. What is God’s message to us?
He is telling us, “I have given you my word. Yes, you went away from Me but I have loved you and have reached out to you and have given you My word. If only you had repented and returned to Me, you would have had peace like a river.”
This is the message to the women, as He went to be crucified. He is wanting the women to understand the pain of God’s heart for our world.
Psalms 14:2-4 The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. (3) They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one. (4) Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And do not call on the LORD?
The Lord is longing to see if there is anyone who understands. Anyone who is seeking God and calling on Him and repenting for the evil of our nations. We are largely coming to God for our own needs to be met.
Isaiah 59:4 No one calls for justice, Nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies; They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity.
This is how our societies can be defined today. No one calls for justice. No one pleads for truth. We have become cultures that trust in empty words.
So, in the midst of all of this despair, the Lord is looking to see if there would be someone who will stand in the gap before God on behalf of the land that God should not destroy the land but there is no one.
Ezekiel 22:30 So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.
This is the heartrending statement from the heart of God.
This was the message to the women, not to feel sad for Him, but for themselves and for their children.
Thought to ponder
What is the substance of your prayers to God?
