Luke 20 41-47 Christ, the Son of David 02 Luke 20 41-44 Jesus accepted His title as the Son of David
10Apr2021 - *Jesus accepted His title as the Son of David* - _Luke 20:41-47_ - CHRIST, THE SON OF DAVID (2) – Bible reading: _Mark 11:8-10_
The Lord is raising a question, especially for the disciples to think about. This question was intended to draw the disciples and others closer to Him. He was contrasting the relationship with Him, with the lifestyle of the religious leaders, which was caught up with putting on an outward show of religiosity and virtue. He was cautioning the disciples not to fall into the trap of the leaven of the religious leaders but desire to be one with Him, in His kingdom.
The Lord was directing the people to understand His kingdom, which begins with the healing of the heart. _Luke 17:21 nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you."_ The religious leaders needed to learn that the self had to be dealt with and taken out of the way, for them to participate in His kingdom.
*Luke 20:41-44 And He said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? (42) Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, " SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, (43) TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL."' (44) Therefore David calls Him 'LORD'; how is He then his Son?"*
The kingdom of David was very familiar to the Jewish people. They loved those passages of scripture that gave details of that kingdom. They were looking forward to the Messiah coming and setting up the Davidic kingdom.
Looking at Jewish history, we can confirm, without a doubt, that the Davidic rule was their golden period. Yes, Solomon’s reign was glorious, but David’s walk, in the fear of the Lord, was the bedrock on which King David’s reign was built.
The kingdom of David was the kingdom with which the Lord identified Himself, for what people experienced during the reign of David was a taste of the Shalom of God. Jesus was bringing the full-blown effect of the Shalom of God and that is why Jesus was the Son of David.
_Jeremiah 33:14-17 ‘Behold, the days are coming,' says the LORD, 'that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah: (15) ‘In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to *David A Branch of righteousness*; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. (16) In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.' (17) "For thus says the LORD: '*David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel*;_
The experience of Jerusalem would be that of the Davidic kingdom, where the effect would be righteousness since they were surrendered to the lordship of Christ. This kingdom would begin from within their heart.
Till now we have looked at Old Testament scripture. Let us now look at the birth of Jesus.
_Luke 1:30-33 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (31) And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. (32) He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and *the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. (33) And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end*."_
The message to Mary was aligned to the prophecy in the Old Testament of the Messiah being the Son of David and the Messiah will set up a kingdom. Though Mary was a village girl, she and all the Jews were familiar with the words of the prophets. Now she is being told that the baby boy, whom she would birth, was the Son of the Highest and the Son of David.
Jesus acknowledged this title, ‘The Son of David’, for Himself.
_Mark 10:47-49 And when he_ (Bartimaeus) _heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "*Jesus, Son of David*, have mercy on me!" (48) Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "*Son of David*, have mercy on me!" (49) *So Jesus stood still* and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, "Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you."_
Jesus identified, acknowledged and responded to the call of Bartimaeus, as the Son of David. We see this again as He entered Jerusalem, triumphantly.
_Matthew 21:8-9 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. (9) Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna to the *Son of David! 'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' Hosanna in the highest!*"_
_Mark 11:8-10 And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. (9) Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna! *'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' (10) Blessed is *the kingdom of our father David* That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!*"_
The religious leaders were angry and indignant that the people called Him as Son of the Highest, as well as, as the Son of David. This meant that here was the Messiah about whom they had preached and for whom they were eagerly waiting. They should have led the way in falling prostrate before the King and worshipped Him. Yet, they could not do so for the self in them was entrenched and they were not able to acknowledge, surrender, submit and enter His kingdom.
_Luke 19:39-40 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." (40) But He answered and said to them, "I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out."_
*Thought to ponder*
```Under Christ, we belong to the reign of David.```
