Luke 23 26-43 THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS 19 Luke 23 36-38 People who have the healing of God
Sat 01 Jan 2022 – People who have the healing of God - Luke 23:26-43 - THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS (19) - Bible reading: Ephesians 2:1-5
“Lord Jesus, we thank You that as You went on the cross, You gave us the greatest gift that man needed, which was the gift of salvation. You took our brokenness upon Yourself and You gave us a new life. This is the message that we carry into the New Year. We do not need to carry our brokenness into the New Year, for in You, Lord, we are saved. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.”
Luke 23:36-38 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, (37) and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself." (38) And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One matter by which the people mocked Jesus was, " If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself .".
Mark 15:29-32 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, (30) save Yourself, and come down from the cross!" (31) Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, " He saved others; Himself He cannot save . (32) Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.
This was the scorning and deriding that happened to Jesus, while He hung on the cross, which was regarding saving Himself.
John 2:18-22 So the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?" (19) Jesus answered and said to them, " Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up ." (20) Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?" (21) But He was speaking of the temple of His body. (22) Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
When Jesus spoke of destroying the temple, He was speaking of His body. On the cross, this was what was taking place. Jesus’ body was being broken.
Jesus went to the cross to be broken in His body so that He could identify with the broken state of man .
We are broken because of our sin. We are broken in every aspect of our lives. Internally, which is our true personality, we are broken.
Due to us being broken individually, we are also creating a cumulative effect of brokenness amongst ourselves. We are not able to live in health and harmony with one another.
Our collective brokenness is also causing us to destroy our environment and creation. This is the devastation that we have caused because of our sin.
We are dead and we are in the clutches of the evil one. This is our terrible state. It was from this state that Jesus came to save mankind.
For man to be healed, Jesus had to take man’s brokenness upon Himself. It was not enough for Jesus to be born in flesh and identify with man but Jesus had to go to the cross and there on the cross, His body had to be broken. He was taking our brokenness upon Himself.
Ephesians 2:1-5 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, Death is a state of darkness, alienation, destruction, sadness, defeat and brokenness.
(2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
We were dead and we were also in the clutches of the devil, who was inflicting death on us. This is the course of the world. (I John 5:19)
(3) among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
Sin made us fulfill the lusts of the flesh and of our mind. We therefore brought upon ourselves the wrath of God.
God could not bear to see us having to bear the wrath of God, which would fall on the children of disobedience. He loved us and He provided the solution for man to come out of the state of brokenness to a state of health and wholeness and become children of God’s pleasure instead of being children of God’s wrath.
(4) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, (5) even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved ),
Jesus had to be broken so that we could be healed or saved.
The word salvation comes from a root Latin word, Salvus, which is to be healed, made well, whole and complete. Jesus was being broken for us so that we could have salvation.
In the body of Jesus there was no sin. His body therefore was broken on our behalf. This is the body of Jesus which we consume by faith at the Lord’s supper.
Jesus was creating in Himself, one new man. Not only individuals who are healed and made whole (saved) because of receiving by faith what Jesus has done on the cross, but a community of people, who are healed and made whole, which is the church.
When we as the church, participate in the Lord’s supper, we are consuming the broken body of Jesus and in faith we are experiencing healing and wholeness as a community.
I Corinthians 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, " Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you ; do this in remembrance of Me."
This must be our message that we carry into the New Year of 2022.
Thought to ponder
We are a community of healed people, who bring healing to a broken world.
