29Sep2020 - *Our sin was laid on Jesus* - _Luke 18:18-30_ - FOLLOWING JESUS TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE 2 – Bible reading: _I Peter 2:22-24_

_Luke 18:18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (19) So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God_

We saw yesterday that the Rich Young Ruler came to Jesus with the right question and he had come to the right person for his answer. Unfortunately, he was stuck with the matter of doing things to have eternal life. His question was, “What shall *I do* to inherit eternal life?

The Lord loved him and longed for him to know, who it was to whom he had come, asking the right question. The Lord made him consider the term, ‘good’, which the Rich Young Ruler had used and by doing so the Lord wanted this man to realise that if he would get it right here, then his quest for eternal life would end. Jesus longed that this man would realise that he was speaking with God.

This man erred at two points. He considered Jesus only as a teacher and not God and his focus was on what he should do to inherit eternal life.

For a man to have eternal life, man’s predicament of sin needed to be settled. _Romans 3:10-12 As it is written: "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE; (11) THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS; THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS AFTER GOD. (12) THEY HAVE ALL TURNED ASIDE; THEY HAVE TOGETHER BECOME UNPROFITABLE; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, NO, NOT ONE."_

All of us stand guilty before God. Our sin causes us to be put aside by God for God is holy. What was our sin? Our sin was that we chose to go our own way. _Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all._ *The heart of sin is the rebellion of the human heart*. We do not want to be surrendered, submitted, yielded and dependent on God. We seek independence from God and that is our sin. We expect to meet God on our terms but being under the yoke of God is not acceptable to us.

Sin caused us to be alienated from God, which is death. The wages of sin is, therefore, death. The Lord loved us and came searching for us to restore us back to Him. The Holy God entered into time and space and into the predicament of man.

_Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that *Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God*._

He, the holy God, came into our dilemma and became our intermediary, in order to reconcile us back to God. _Hebrews 7:26 For such *a High Priest* was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; I Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: *God was manifested in the flesh*, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory._

What did Jesus do, in order to reconcile us back to God? Our sin was laid on Jesus and he became the perfect sacrifice to pay for our sin before God. _I Peter 2:22-24 "WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH"; (23) who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; (24) who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed._

_I John 3:5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. II Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him._

God was providing the solution for a man to be reconciled with God and have eternal life. This was what the Lord was hoping for the Rich Young Ruler to understand, by probing his thinking.

For a man to be righteous before God and have eternal life, he has to believe in Jesus. _Romans 10:3-4 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. (4) For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes._

_Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, (4) that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit._

Now our life is a life of faith, wherein the Holy Spirit operates in us and we are no more seeking to ‘do’ anything to have eternal life.

*Thought to ponder*
