07 – 14Mar2022 – Reminder to the disciples through Mary - Luke 24:09-12 - MEETING THE RISEN LORD - Bible reading: John 15:26-27

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, for You are patient with us, even though our hearts are hardened. We hesitate to fully trust and be cast upon You. We pray that we will surrender to You with simplicity and eagerness. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

We have seen the encounter of the risen Lord with Mary Magdalene. She was empowered to be a totally different person. She was on an assignment to tell the disciples that she had met with the risen Jesus.

Luke 24:9-11 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. (10) It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. (11) And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.

We saw that Jesus told Mary not to cling to Him. We also saw the substance of the commission that was entrusted to her.

John 20:17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.' "

Mary then came to the disciples, as a totally transformed person by Jesus, to share the glorious message of His resurrection.

John 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

Mary was being a faithful witness to the resurrected Jesus. We have to be doing exactly what Mary had done, which is to share the truth of the risen Lord to the world around us, which is perishing.

Mary’s task did not end with her having shared this message with the disciples but this became her life mission. “Go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God”

Mary was no more looking for the dead body of Jesus. She had met with the risen Lord. She was no longer living for herself but for Him who died for her and rose again. This has to be the transformation that must happen to us. The transformation of Mary must grip us.

The disciples were being reminded of what would happen when Jesus ascended to the Father. This was conveyed to the disciples just before He was crucified.

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

The Lord had told the disciples that it is good for them that He should go to the Father. For then the Father would send them the Holy Spirit.

The disciples needed to understand that they were moving into a new realm of relationship with Him, just as it had happened with Mary Magdalene. The disciples were being reminded and prepared that their relationship with Him would be in the atmosphere of the Holy Spirit. This is a reminder to all of us that we are now in the life of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of resurrection

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

The Lord was also reminding the disciples that when He ascends to the Father, the Holy Spirit will be their teacher. As it was with Mary, the disciples too had known Jesus as their teacher but now the Holy Spirit would be their teacher, reminding, teaching and bringing into application the words of our Lord.

John 14:26-27 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of peace.

(27) Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Holy Spirit will keep us in the experience of His indwelling peace, at all times.

Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

The other reminder to the disciples was that now they were to be His witnesses, of His resurrection.

John 15:26-27 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father , He will testify of Me. (27) And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

At this point, the disciples were still in a state of unbelief of the resurrection of the Lord. Yet, the Lord knew that one day they would be powerful witnesses of His resurrection because the Holy Spirit would take over their lives.

Thought to ponder

Are you living and witnessing to Jesus, in the realm of the Holy Spirit?
