13 – 20Mar2022 – Fresh understanding of the Scriptures - Luke 24:09-12 - MEETING THE RISEN LORD - Bible reading: Luke 24:44-49

“Thank You, Jesus, that You are the God who is invisible. Our whole life is evidence of things not seen. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

The Lord was moving His disciples from unbelief to belief. We now see the response of Peter to the message of the women.

Luke 24:12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

Peter ran to the tomb and saw the grave cloths lying by themselves. Peter then departed, marvelling as to what had happened. We can’t be sure if Peter had moved from unbelief to belief.

Let us move across to the gospel of John. It was not only Peter who went to the tomb but also John who ran to the tomb. They ran to see for themselves, the message of the women that Jesus had risen from the dead.

John 20:3-10 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. (4) So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. (5) And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. (6) Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, (7) and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. (8) Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. (9) For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. (10) Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

The word of God tells us, clearly, that John saw and believed. Let us understand the resurrection of Jesus by seeing through the eyes of Peter and John and be assured in our faith in Jesus.

They saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.

The Jewish leaders spread the information that the disciples came at night and stole the body of Jesus, while the soldiers slept (Matthew 28:11-15)

If the disciples had stolen the body of Jesus, while the soldiers slept, then they would have taken the body in haste, wrapped with the grave cloths or would have torn the grave cloths from the body, and left the cloths lying scattered.

Whereas, the grave cloths were lying undisturbed and the head cloths were folded together and kept separately. This tells us that the body of Jesus came out from the grave cloths and moved out of the tomb

There is a stark contrast to the resurrection of Lazarus.

John 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

John 11:43-44 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" (44) And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go."

The stone had to be rolled away, to let Lazarus out. Whereas the stone was rolled away, not to let Jesus out of the tomb but to allow the women to come in, to see that Jesus has risen.

Lazarus came out with his grave cloths. Jesus left his grave cloths behind

The grave cloths around Lazarus had to be unwrapped, for he could not unwrap it by himself. Whereas, for Jesus, He arose through the grave cloths.

The resurrected body of Jesus could come out of the grave cloths. He moved out of a shut tomb, met with Mary and the other women, entered a closed room, met and spoke with the disciples, ate food, had the prints of the nails and He was recognizable.

John is the only one who records the resurrection of Lazarus and so we can assume that he is processing the resurrection of Lazarus with what he is now seeing in the tomb of Jesus. John believed that Jesus had risen from the dead.

Though John believed, we do not see any significant change in the disciples, immediately.

John 20:9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.

This is a strange verse for they knew the words of Jesus that He would rise from dead. Then what does this verse mean?

Luke 24:44-49 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (45) And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (46) Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, (47) and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (48) And you are witnesses of these things. (49) Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

The scriptures were beginning to fall into place in their understanding but they had to wait in Jerusalem till they were endued with the filling of the Holy Spirit.

Thought to ponder

Life is no more based out of evidences but faith in His word.
