11 – 01Apr2022 – Fulfilment of Scriptures - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: Isaiah 53:1-12
“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You reveal Yourself to us through the Scriptures. We understand all that You have done us. In Your precious name, we pray. Amen”
The Lord reprimanded the disciples for holding on to wrong perspectives. The Lord, in His love, brought to them the right understanding of Himself, Through the Scriptures.
Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! (26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" (27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES. This is the theme of the study of this passage. A wonderful exposition of Himself was given by the Lord to the disciples, from the Scriptures. What was the impact on the disciples?
This is from the life of Apostle Paul.
Acts 17:3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ."
The change of perspective of the disciples is admirably captured for us here. This was how all of the disciples became, as their perspectives were altered by the Scriptures and by the Holy Spirit.
This is the clarity and confidence that the Lord desires for all of us. This has become the common platform on which all the disciples of Christ have witnessed Him down through the ages.
The Lord expounded to the disciples, in all the Scriptures, the things concerning Himself. Here are a few of the references, from the Old Testament to the sufferings of Christ and His resurrection.
Genesis 3:15; 22:18, 26:4; 49:10; Numbers 21:6-9; Deuteronomy 18:15; Psalms 16, Psalms 22:1-31, Psalms 69:1-36; Isaiah 53:1-12; Zechariah 13:7;
We can only imagine how this Bible study must have been for those two disciples, which the Lord took for them. The study that the Lord took them through was of two parts. One was of His suffering and the other was of His glory. There are again several references regarding the glory of Jesus and of His kingdom.
How are we to understand what the Lord taught the two disciples? This is such a vast canvas of study. Let us try to get a hold of these two major streams of the thought that the Lord placed before the disciples.
Let us first try to understand the sufferings of Christ. Apostle Paul is giving this powerful teaching in the synagogue in Antioch in Pisidia.
Acts 13:26-41 "Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. (27) For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. (28) And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. (29) Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. (30) But God raised Him from the dead. (31) He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. (32) And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers. (33) God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' (34) And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE SURE MERCIES OF DAVID.' (35) Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION.'
Paul was showing them how the leaders in Jerusalem, though they were familiar with the Scriptures, fulfilled the Scriptures by having Jesus put to death on the cross.
We need to realise that the cross confuses the devil.
Through Peter, the devil tried to prevent Jesus from going to the cross. Matthew 16:21-23 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. (22) Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" (23) But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."
Through Judas, the devil took Jesus to the cross. John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him,
The Lord had to suffer for the reconciliation of man and all of creation back to God. The disciples had to understand the sufferings of Christ.
Apostle Paul is helping us get an idea of how the Lord would have opened the Scriptures to them and revealed Himself.
Thought to ponder
The sufferings of Christ is the place for the healing of mankind and creation.
