12 – 02Apr2022 – Jesus had to come in the flesh - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: Romans 8:3-4

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You took Your disciples through the Scriptures to know You. They understood Your suffering and Your glory. We give You all the glory and praise. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

We continue to look at the response of Jesus to the perspective of the disciples of what had taken place.

Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! (26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" (27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Jesus began from Moses and then took the disciples through the words of the prophets. He expounded to them the things concerning Himself.

I had given a sample of references from the Old Testament of the things concerning the sufferings of Jesus. We continue to look at how Apostle Paul testified about Christ from the Scriptures, in Antioch. We are looking at this explanation as it is an easier way for us to grasp the exposition of Jesus.

Acts 13:29-41 Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.

Though the Jewish leaders were conversant with the Scriptures, they had Jesus put to death and by doing so, fulfilled the Scriptures.

(30) But God raised Him from the dead. (31) He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.

Being witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus, gave the disciples the authority to testify of Jesus as the Christ.

(32) And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers. (33) God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' (34) And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE SURE MERCIES OF DAVID.' (35) Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION.'

The important point that Apostle Paul is emphasising with regard to the resurrection of Jesus was that God did not allow His Holy One to see corruption or decay. Why was this a matter of great importance?

(36) "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;

Paul is saying here that David was not talking about himself. David died and his body saw corruption.

(37) but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. This is important for us. The body of Jesus did not see corruption.

(38) Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; (39) and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

The law of Moses will not help us to be justified before God. The law is good but by the keeping of the law, no one will be made righteous. Only those who believe in Jesus will be justified before God.

This is because Jesus is holy. He came for us to be justified before God for we could do nothing to meet the righteous requirements of God. There was no sin in the flesh of Jesus and that was the reason why His body did not see corruption. Death and the grave could not hold Jesus and He rose again. Jesus thus gave us the basis for us to believe in Him.

In believing in Jesus, we are imputed with His righteousness.

Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, (4) that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

The righteous requirement of the law cannot be fulfilled in us, by our flesh. The righteous requirement of the law is met in us when we walk by faith in the Spirit of God and not be the flesh.

Jesus made this a possibility for us by going to the cross and taking our sin on Himself.

II Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

This is the message of Paul to the Jews that those who believe in Jesus are justified before God, which was not possible by the law of Moses.

Acts 13:40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: (41) ‘BEHOLD, YOU DESPISERS, MARVEL AND PERISH! FOR I WORK A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL BY NO MEANS BELIEVE, THOUGH ONE WERE TO DECLARE IT TO YOU.' "

Paul is placing it clearly before his audience that if they do not believe in Jesus, they will perish. This is the reason why the Lord was concerned that the disciples ought to have the right perspective of Him so that they would believe, be justified before God and they would be witnesses and messengers to enable many others to place their faith in Jesus and be saved.

Jesus is making it clear to the disciples that He is the Messiah, the Christ.

Thought to ponder

Our foundations need to be right.
