13 – 03Apr2022 – His sufferings and His glory - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: Hebrews 2:9-10
“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You came to reign and Your kingdom is an eternal kingdom. We submit to You and we worship You, for we belong to You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
We continue to meditate on the response of the Lord to the perspectives of the disciples, of what had happened.
Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! (26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" (27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
As we consider the response of Jesus to the disciples, we find two major streams of thought. This was an enormous Bible study that the Lord took for these two disciples, which spanned from Moses to all the prophets, of the things concerning Him.
The two streams of thought that flowed from this study were the sufferings of Christ and the other was His glory.
We have understood, to some extent, the relevance of the sufferings of Christ, through the message of Apostle Paul at the synagogue in Antioch. Now, let us get some understanding of the glory of Christ.
In the Old Testament, there are several passages that speak of Jesus and of His glorious kingdom. This is not an exhaustive list, but just a sample.
Genesis 49:10; Isaiah 1:26, Isaiah 9:6-7; Jeremiah 23:5-6, Jeremiah 33:15-17, Jeremiah 33:26; Ezekiel 37:24-27; Daniel 7:13-14; 7:27; Hosea 3:4; Joel 3:16-21; Amos 9:11; Obadiah 1:17-21; Micah 5:2; Zephaniah 3:15-17; Zechariah 9:9
Hebrews 2:9-10 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. (10) For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
We see here the connections from the cross to the death of Jesus, His burial, His resurrection and His glory. It is not only about His glory. The purpose of God is that we too would be one with Him, in His glorious position.
In understanding Christ, the Lord is inviting us to identify with Him in His death, burial, resurrection and in His glory.
Though we refer often to the teachings of Paul, this was the perspective change that happened to all the disciples.
Philippians 2:7-11 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (9) Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, (11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
This passage gives us the wonderful connection between the sufferings and the glory of Christ, which was what the Lord was teaching on the road to Emmaus. The perspectives of the disciples needed to change. We are to identify with Jesus, both in His sufferings as well as in His glory.
Ephesians 1:20-23 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
The Lord wanted the disciples to undergo a complete change of perspective. He wanted them to see His glory. His name which is far above every other name, power, might, dominion, authority, in this age and in the age which is to come. This is the glory of Jesus.
All of this was placed under the feet of Jesus and He was given to be the head over all things, to the church. The church has to understand the sufferings and the glory of Christ. We need to understand that this is our identity. We find our identity in Christ, who is our head. We are His body.
We were co-rulers with Christ, over all of His creation. This was our first position when God created us, but we became vassals of the devil because of sin. The devil is dictating his agenda over mankind and over all of creation, through us, since the executive powers over creation, are still with man. We are being used by the devil to accomplish His evil agenda.
When we identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, we also identify with Jesus in His glory. We are once again reinstated as His co-rulers/vice-regents, to now execute God’s purposes over all of God’s creation.
This is how Peter concludes his message about the sufferings and the glory of Christ. The perspective change had taken place in the disciples. This is what must happen in the church.
Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
Thought to ponder
Has it become settled in you that you are now a co-ruler with Christ, over all of His creation?
