16 β 06Apr2022 β Jesus, the Bread of Life - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: John 6:33-35
βLord Jesus, You are our sufficiency. Our life is full, complete and satisfied in You. We are in Your shelter, in the hollow of Your hand. Lord, teach us to know You more and be fully rested in You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.β
The Lord indicated that He would go further but the disciples constrained Jesus to stay with them, not yet knowing Him as the Lord. Jesus agreed and He stayed with them.
Luke 24:30-31 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. (31) Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
This was the pinnacle moment of the interaction of the two disciples with the Lord. They had had the wonderful Scripture study but now they knew the Lord.
As Jesus broke the bread with the disciples, the two disciples, suddenly, recognised Him. Not only did they recognise Him but they knew Him.
Matthew 14:19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
This was the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. The need of the people was met and it was the Lord who had met the need. He was the source.
After the five thousand were fed, the people there were looking for Jesus. They were looking for Jesus because they saw Him as a good and regular source for their need for bread. They saw bread as their need in life.
This is how people are, in coming to Jesus. We see Jesus as the source of our needs. Our need to be met is our primary and ultimate purpose in life. If Jesus can be the means to meet our needs, then we would like to have Jesus.
John 6:26-27 Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. (27) Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
It is not the bread that can satisfy the need of man. It is the Lord who satisfies our every need. He is our sufficiency. He is our all.
As the Lord broke bread with the two disciples, their eyes were opened and they knew Him.
Matthew 15:35-37 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. (36) And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. (37) So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.
The disciples were able to reconnect with the other miracle that Jesus had done to feed the seven thousand.
Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
As Jesus broke bread with the two disciples, all of these memories came flooding into their minds and they knew Him. The Lord desires that man should know Him, for in Him is our fulfilment.
John 6:33-35 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." (34) Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always." (35) And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
The Lord was showing people that He was the Bread, who has come down from heaven to give life to the world. But people were only wanting Jesus as the means by whom their bread needs can be met.
As Jesus broke the bread that evening, the two disciples saw Jesus as the Bread of life. They saw Him as the all-sufficient God. They knew Him.
John 6:48-51 I am the bread of life. (49) Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. (50) This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. (51) I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."
Everyone is in a race to study, work, earn, save, build up and grow, all for the sake of making sure to be well settled in life. We have made our relationship with Jesus, a means to our end.
Whereas, the Lord is showing us that when we know Him as our Bread, as our sufficiency, then we are free from the madness of humanity. We become free, to love and serve people and bring them to know Jesus.
Our places of study, work, career, business or service are not places for our survival but are places of worship, bringing glory to God and serving people.
Job 12:9-10 Who among all these does not know That the hand of the LORD has done this, (10) In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind? Acts 17:28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'
Thought to ponder
Are you still coming to Jesus as a means to your end?
