22 – 12Apr2022 – The Lord is our strength and our song - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: Isaiah 12:2-3

“Lord Jesus, when we look at the world around us, there is turmoil and sadness. Whereas, in You, there is peace, rest, quietness and joy. You are our strength and our song. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

The conversation between the two disciples changed completely after they knew Jesus.

Luke 24:32 And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?"

There was excitement and joy in their conversation, between them. This was the change that took place because they knew Jesus. Out of this excitement they acted.

Luke 24:33-34 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, (34) saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"

It was a day-long journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Let us look at these two disciples, at the start of that day.

Luke 24:13-17 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. (14) And they talked together of all these things which had happened. (15) So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. (16) But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. (17) And He said to them, " What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad? "

There was no energy but disappointment and sadness in their entire disposition. They must have been dragging themselves while walking. Thus was their state at the start of the day.

At the end of the day, after knowing Jesus, these two disciples were completely changed. They were full of energy, joy and strength. There was a gush of enthusiasm that overtook them. This difference was not something that they generated from within themselves, but it was of the Lord. The Lord was their strength and their song.

Friends, this must be the identity of the church. The Lord is the one who makes the difference in us. It is not about us. We are those who rise above our circumstances, not because we have learnt a new trick from within ourselves. It is the Lord Jesus, who makes us rise above our situations.

Habakkuk 3:19 The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.

The Lord strengthens us to walk on our high hills. The high hills of life have not disappeared but the Lord strengthens us and makes our feet like deer’s feet, in order for us to walk on our high hills.

Psalms 18:29 For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.

Troops may amass against us. Walls may rise against us, yet we are not afraid or filled with despondency and despair. We are able to run against the troop and leap over our walls. It is the Lord, who strengthens us and enables us.

Are you full of anguish and gloom? Is your heart heavy? I wish to encourage you. The Lord is your strength and your song. I’m not saying that your problems will vanish. God does take away the crisis, but the Lord surely strengthens us, even as we face our crisis, and He empowers us to rise above our struggles.

I invite you to come as a little child and tell the Lord that you want to be like those two disciples, who were at one time, full of grief and sorrow but now they were full of energy and strength. The Lord will surely strengthen you and place a song in your heart.

Isaiah 12:2-3 Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; 'For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.' " (3) Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.

The life of God’s strength and song, for the disciples of Jesus, does not depend on our circumstances becoming favourable. God does alter circumstance but the Lord, surely, strengthens us in the inner man.

Psalms 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?

Fear of circumstances is not from God. It is the devil, the deceiver, who deceives us and makes us look at our circumstances and makes us afraid. We must resist the devil and he will flee. We must keep our eyes on our Lord and there be strengthened.

Zechariah 10:12 "So I will strengthen them in the LORD, And they shall walk up and down in His name," Says the LORD.

The two disciples were able to walk back to Jerusalem, at the very same hour. There was energy in their legs. There was a song in their hearts. They were renewed because they knew Jesus.

Thought to ponder

"The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." '
