Luke 16 18 The covenantal relationship of marriage 02 Lofty relationship of marriage
19Apr2020 - *Lofty relationship of marriage* - _Luke 16:18_ - Bible reading: _Ephesians 5:28-32_
_Luke 16:18 “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery._
Though the verse for our consideration is about marriage and divorce, we have an opportunity here to understand the covenant relationship of marriage.
As Adam was naming the beasts and birds, there was not a helper comparable to him _(Genesis 2:20)_ God also confirmed that Adam needed a helper comparable to him _(Genesis 2:18)_ So God made Eve out of Adam. She was not made out of the dust of the ground as Adam was made _Genesis 2:21-22)_. So when Adam saw Eve, he said _Genesis 2:23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."_ Eve was comparable and equal to him but she was distinct from him. Society was therefore made up of man and woman, who are equal and comparable to each other but at the same time distinct from each other.
From man and woman, the relationship moved to another level. One man shall take one woman and they were no more just man and woman but they were now husband and wife. _Genesis 2:24-25 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed_
Human society was made up of these marriage units of one man with his one wife. The husband and his wife enjoyed an intimacy that was exclusive only for this relationship of marriage. Husband and his wife experienced and understood the intimate relationship of marriage.
God’s purpose was that man would be in a marriage relationship with God, just as a husband and his wife. We are comparable to God for we are one with Him. _Ephesians 5:30-32 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones._ Jesus is our bridegroom and the church is His bride. Jesus took us, the church, who were comparable to Him, as His bride.
The husband and his wife relationship was to represent the marriage relationship between Jesus and the church. _(31) "FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH." (32) This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church._
As we understand the purpose of marriage, we will then look at marriage with great reverence and awe.
*Thought to ponder*
```Marriage between one man and his one wife is a lofty relationship, which satan will do his very best to destroy.```
