Luke 16 18 The covenantal relationship of marriage 14 A godly generation
01May2020 - *A godly generation* - _Luke 16:18_ - Bible reading: _Deuteronomy 6:4-8_
_Malachi 2:15-16 But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. (16) "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously."_
_Luke 16:18 “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery._ This is a verse related to divorce and remarriage. We took up this theme of the covenantal relationship of marriage from this verse. One more crucial matter that we must look at is the matter related to raising children.
We have reduced raising children to the dynamics of parenting and so we have courses, seminars and workshops on parenting skills for children of different age groups. This effort is good but we must see the bigger picture of how God intends for us to consider marriage and about raising children.
What we are saying is that as a man and his wife step into marriage, it is absolutely critical that they build their marriage on the covenantal relationship but also keep in mind that the covenantal relationship of marriage includes, raising a godly generation.
What is important about raising a godly generation? _Deuteronomy 7:6 “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth._ God is reconciling a lost world back to Him and for God to reconcile the whole of creation back to Him, there is the need to have those who represent His character and His nature to a world that is far removed from God.
From where will those representatives of God emerge? They will emerge from stable homes, which are built on the covenantal relationship of marriage. These homes become the nurseries from where godly generations are raised.
We see where we are today. Due to divorce and remarriage, which has become common, the covenantal relationship of marriage is not even being discussed. Since we are not building our marriages on the covenantal relationship, look at what this has caused to the development of children. The result is plain for us to see.
How God’s heart breaks, when He sees children suffer and are lost because the father and the mother did not build their marriage on the covenantal relationship. _Matthew 18:6 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea._
The imperative is that out of the covenantal relationship of marriage, a godly generation is raised.
How do we raise a godly generation? It is through the nurturing of our children on the practical application of God’s word into everyday life situations. _Deuteronomy 6:4-8 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! (5) You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (6) "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. (7) You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (8) You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes._
*Thought to ponder*
```Will you as husband and wife, commit to raising a godly generation?```
