21 – 07May2022 – Setting us free from the problem of sin - Luke 24:36-49 - COMMISSIONED TO BE HIS WITNESSES - Bible reading: Hebrews 9:13-15

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have given us the privilege to understand how You provided us with forgiveness of sin. Lord, we pray that this understanding will give us a sense of awe, reverence and fear before You. Lord, we pray that we will yield our bodies as instruments of righteousness and not as instruments to sin. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

Luke 24:47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

We are focussing on the matter of forgiveness of sin and we are considering a few passages in the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 9:23-28 Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Moses, sprinkled the tabernacle and the vessels of the ministry, with blood. All of these items, in the temple worship, were copies of the things in the heavens. The heavenly things themselves had to be cleansed with a better sacrifice.

(24) For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

Jesus did not enter into the holy places made with hands, for these places were only copies of the true. Jesus entered into heaven itself, in order to provide the sacrifices necessary to God, for our sins to be forgiven. This is the reason why Jesus becomes the final solution for the problem of man’s sin.

Our sin has heavenly ramifications. In the presence of God, the problems that our sin has created needed to be set right. Jesus provided the solution for the heavenly consequences of our sin.

(25) not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— (26) He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

The High Priest appeared once a year for the sin of the people. Jesus has entered heaven itself, and settled the matter of our sin before God, once and for all time.

(27) And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, (28) so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Man is given a unique opportunity, while he is here on earth, to repent and be converted, in order to experience the forgiveness of sin, provided by Jesus. This is the opportunity that every individual, must grab with both hands, in gratitude.

Jesus has provided this eternal solution for man, for his problem of sin, but if a man disregards what the Lord has provided, then that man must know that it is appointed for man to die once, after which is the judgement. At the judgement, the issue that will be at stake will be if a person’s name is written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Revelation 21:27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Jesus also died only once. (There was no necessity for Jesus to die several times.) He had provided for all time the solution for man’s sin.

Jesus is coming again the second time, not for the problem of sin. (This matter has been settled by Jesus on the cross.) Jesus is coming again, the second time, for those who are waiting for Him, to spend eternity with Him, away from the presence of sin. This is salvation, in its fullness.

Hebrews 9:13-15 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, (14) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The Old Covenant had its usefulness. It was a replica of the true, and people, to some extent, experienced the forgiveness of sin. Nevertheless, sacrifices needed to be done, repeatedly.

If the Old Covenant had its value, how much greater is the incalculable value of the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered Himself without spot to God. It is this offering of Jesus to God that cleanses or gives us remission from our sins, to serve the living God.

(15) And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Jesus, therefore mediates for us a New Covenant so that we will participate with God in His eternal inheritance for us.

Thought to ponder

Do we see the consequence and solution for sin, from an eternal perspective?
