22 – 08May2022 – A new and living way - Luke 24:36-49 - COMMISSIONED TO BE HIS WITNESSES - Bible reading: Hebrews 10:19-23

“Lord Jesus, we are overwhelmed as we look more intently at the forgiveness of our sin that You have provided for us. Have mercy on us, for we do not take time to understand the immensity of what You have provided us. We take what we have understood, lightly, and we often go back to sin in the flesh. Pardon us, Lord Jesus. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

Luke 24:47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Let us continue to examine the matter of forgiveness of our sin.

Hebrews 7:26-28 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; (27) who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people's, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

The High Priest had to offer a sacrifice for himself and then for the people before he could enter the Holiest. Jesus did not have to offer any sacrifice for Himself, for He was undefiled and separate from sinners. He offered up His own body as the sacrifice for the sin of humanity, once and for all time.

(28) For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

The word of God, which came from the heavens, appointed the Son, who has been perfected forever.

Matthew 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Jesus was thus the perfect sacrifice for the sin of the human race.

Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

This was the limitation of the first covenant. There was a necessity for the institution of a New Covenant that will provide a permanent and lasting solution for the sin of man.

Hebrews 10:9-10 then He said, "BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. (10) By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Jesus came in the flesh and He did the Father’s will. John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

This body of Jesus, in which the will of God was fulfilled, was the body that was offered as a sin offering for man.

Jesus, offered to God, His body, as the perfect sacrifice for man's sin. Jesus offers us His body, by which we too can participate in His divine nature.

Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

We are perfected forever, which is forgiveness of our sin before God.

We are also being sanctified, which is the matter of the remission of our sin.

Hebrews 10:16-18 "THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR HEARTS, AND IN THEIR MINDS I WILL WRITE THEM," (17) then He adds, "THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE." (18) Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Jesus, therefore, has provided for us a new and living way. He has opened for us the New Covenant. God’s laws are now written in our hearts and minds.

When we come to Jesus and receive forgiveness of sin, we are also set free from the law of sin and death. We are now expected to operate on the principle of the New Covenant. We are now heirs of God’s inheritance of living victoriously over sin.

Hebrews 10:19-23 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, (20) by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, (21) and having a High Priest over the house of God, (22) let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (23) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

We, therefore, have the boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus. The new and living way has been consecrated for us by Jesus, by His flesh.

There is a warning that we must all give heed to.

Hebrews 10:29-31 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (30) For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE." (31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

After understanding what is forgiveness and remission of sin that Jesus has provided, if we were to go back to sin, nonchalantly, in our flesh, what do we expect will be the consequence?

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Let us be warned.

Thought to ponder

“Father, give us a reverential fear of You. Thank You.”
