17Oct2020 - *Let us not be foolish and slow of heart* - _Luke 18:31-34_ - KNOWING THE THINGS THAT ARE SPOKEN 2 – Bible reading: _Luke 24:25-27_

The Jews had no excuse and the disciples had no excuse for not knowing, why Jesus had to go to the cross. He took the twelve aside and explained to them about His crucifixion, His suffering, His burial and His resurrection, which was to happen. They did not understand nor did they seek to know. If they had sought to know and understand, He would have surely expounded the plans and purposes of God to them.

_Luke 18:31-34 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. (32) For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. (33) They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again." (34) But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken._

The Old Testament prophets had written of the works of God. They had given graphic details of both the reign of Christ as well as the suffering of Christ. Here are a few of the Old Testament references of the sufferings of Christ. _Psalms 22 / 69 / Isaiah 53 / Daniel 9:26 / Zechariah 13:7_

While He was with them, the disciples did not seek to know the reason for the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross, His burial and His resurrection. Let us see what happened after Jesus rose from the dead.

_Luke 24:3-8 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. (4) And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. (5) Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? (6) He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, (7) saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' " (8) And they remembered His words._

They remembered His words but they still did not understand His words and the message that He longed to convey to them so that they would be one with Him in His plans and purposes.

It is the same with us. God longs that we will be one with Him in the execution of His plans and purposes but our relationship with God is more in line with God solving the problems of our small world that we have erected for ourselves. He hears and answers our prayers, for He loves us but His heart longs for the time when we will sit and wait in His presence, to discuss, learn, understand, appreciate and participate with Him in the execution of His purposes.

The Lord intruded into the conversation of the two disciples as they plodded to Emmaus. _Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! (26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" (27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself._

He was patient with them to expound to them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself. He called them foolish and slow of heart. Doesn’t that assessment apply directly to us? It applies more perfectly to us for we have the benefit of two millenniums of church history to consider, yet we have chosen not to understand the plans and purposes of God for we still come to Him only for the resolution of our struggles in life.

_Luke 24:44-49 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (45) And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (46) Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, (47) and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (48) And you are witnesses of these things. (49) Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."_

We are witnesses, to all nations, to the all-encompassing plan and purposes of God, within which repentance and remission of the sins of man, through the death of Jesus on the cross, His burial and His resurrection, are pivotal.

*Thought to ponder*

```Will you still choose to remain foolish and slow of heart?```
