Luke 18 31-34 KNOWING THE THINGS THAT ARE SPOKEN OF HIM 03 Fullness of understanding
18Oct2020 - *Fullness of understanding* - _Luke 18:31-34_ - KNOWING THE THINGS THAT ARE SPOKEN AND WRITTEN OF HIM 3 – Bible reading: _Isaiah 11:1-2_
_Luke 18:31 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished._
Yesterday, we saw how the Lord reprimanded the disciples for their foolishness and slowness of heart. _Luke 24:25 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!_ Foolishness and slowness of heart is not an excuse. The Lord requires us to be people of understanding of His word.
_II Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work._
The man of God is expected to be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Let us look at Isaiah 53, a familiar chapter on the suffering of the Lord and how the things that were spoken of the Messiah concerning His suffering are also linked with the prophecy concerning His reign as King.
_Isaiah 53:2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And *as a root out of dry ground*. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him._
_Isaiah 53:2 …As a root out of dry ground…_ This picture gives us an understanding of dryness and drought. This is how Jesus was as He suffered on the cross. At the same time the prophecy of Jesus was also, _Isaiah 11:1-2 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. (2) The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD._
_Jeremiah 23:5-6 “Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. (6) In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS._
Are we able to see both sides of the Messiah that were spoken of Him? The disciples and the Jews chose to accept one part of what was written of Him. This was their folly. Knowing the blunder that the disciples made, should we also fall into the same trap? Should we not see the grand design of God that He reigns and we too are to reign with Him but man must be reconciled to God through the cross.
_Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And *we hid, as it were, our faces from Him*; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him._
_Isaiah 53:3 …We hid as it were our faces from Him…_ We see several prophecies that were spoken of the reign of the Messiah but the other side of the prophecy was that we will hide our faces from Him.
This was the disappointment that was beginning to set in, into the minds of the disciples as Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem and to the cross. They tried to shut their minds out from the sufferings of the cross, which He was repeatedly explaining to them, but wanted to cling only to the hope that He will soon set up His kingdom.
The first one to break was Judas Iscariot. He decided that he had wasted his time in following Jesus, for Jesus was not going to set up His kingdom. Judas decided to hide his face from Jesus. Judas decided to betray Him.
_Zechariah 11:13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"—that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter._
We must see the significance of the cross and we must also see that the cross was necessary for the reign of Jesus to come on earth.
*Thought to ponder*
```Are you clinging to only one part of Jesus?```
