03 - 17Jan2022 – The wrath of God fell on Jesus - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: John 11:49-52

“Lord Jesus, on the cross, the entirety of sin and all of its dreadful ramifications were laid upon You and You bore it all. Sin, which took us away from God and caused us to lose the habitat of God, was now being paid for, on the cross. We thank You for what You have done for us. In Jesus' most precious name we pray, Amen.”

Luke 23:44-45 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (45) Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

These three hours of darkness represent the evil of man. All the wickedness, the sin, the evil that man has done, over time, individually and cumulatively against God, to himself, to one another and to creation. This horror of sin was laid on Jesus and this was the three hours of darkness.

This was the purpose for which Jesus came on the earth. Sin had to be settled before a holy and righteous God. God cannot bypass sin. If sin is not settled before God, there is no way for man to be reconciled with God. Sin had to be paid for, for man to come back to the fullness of life that God desires for man and creation to enjoy.

When Jesus identified Himself with the fullness of man’s sin against God, God’s wrath came on Jesus. This was the other side to the three hours of darkness that took place on the cross.

Jesus bearing man’s sin on Himself is one side and the other is, God’s wrath that fell on Jesus because Jesus was now made sin for us. These are the two sides of the three hours of darkness.

Sin produces the wrath of God. The wrath of God will fall on sin. The wrath of God cannot be put aside.

It is unimaginable what the wrath of God will be. Only Jesus was able to bear the wrath of God. He took the wrath of God on Himself.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

This was the cup that the Lord knew, He would have to drink. Jesus knew that He would have to drink the cup of God’s wrath. We can now appreciate the depth of His agony when Jesus prayed to the Father.

Matthew 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."

This matter of Jesus being cut off from God was prophesied.

Daniel 9:26 a “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; … The Son was cut off from the Father because the wrath of God fell on Jesus.

Isaiah 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

Jesus was cut off from life. Life is the relationship that we have when we are in the habitat of God. Jesus was cut off from life because of the wrath of God that came upon Him.

Though the Jews were scheming to put Jesus to death, prophecy came through the high priest, Caiaphas.

John 11:49-52 And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, (50) nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish." (51) Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, (52) and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

These three hours of darkness is the pinnacle moment of the cross. This was where all the heavenly transactions that needed to be done for man and creation, was done, completed and finished.

II Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We are all so excited for the blessing that we now have in Jesus and what He did for us on the cross. Yes, it is important to celebrate but at the same time, let us keep in the mind the immensity of the three hours of darkness that Jesus had to undergo in order for us to inherit the blessing.

Romans 5:6-8 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. (8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Friends, this is the love of God. We were not repenting and returning to God. We were not repenting then, neither are we repenting now. We continue on, in our arrogant and selfish ways. It is for such people like us, Christ bore the wrath of God.

These were the three hours of darkness that we take time to meditate, every year, for us to be reminded of what the Lord undertook for us to be reconciled with Him and come back to the Shalom of God.

Thought to ponder

Oh the love of God…
