04 - 18Jan2022 – Man’s death was being settled - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: Romans 6:23

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, on the cross You settled the greatest problem of man, which is death. We sinned and the wage of sin is death. You took our death upon Yourself on the cross. We give You all the glory, praise, worship and adoration. In Jesus most precious name we pray, Amen.”

When the wrath of God came on Jesus because of Man’s sin, Jesus was cut off. We see here, that at this point, Jesus died on the cross. This was where Jesus was cut off from the Father and Jesus died.

Daniel 9:26 a “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; …

God is the source of life and when a person is cut off from God, that person dies.

Luke 23:44-45 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (45) Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

Mark 15:33-34 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. (34) And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

These words, which we refer to as the fourth word that Jesus spoke from the cross, tell us that Jesus died.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God gave us eternal life through Christ. For God to give us life, death had to be settled. Death is the wage for sin. Death had to be paid, settled and Jesus paid it by His death. Jesus died by being alienated from the Father.

Psalms 22:1 To the Chief Musician. Set to "The Deer of the Dawn." a Psalm of David. My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning?

We must go to the very beginning to understand death.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The life that came into man was the breath of God. Man was created to be in an intimate, breath-to-breath relationship with God. It is only when man is in this deep relationship with God that man lives.

Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

We were created out of the dust, which is material, but we are also created to be spiritual beings, for the Spirit of God was breathed into us. Man is, therefore, both matter and Spirt.

John 1:3-4 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (4) In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

God gave us life but man was commanded to live under the lordship of God by submitting to God. It was only when man submitted to God that man would live and not die. Man was created with freedom of choice/will. Yet, man was commanded to be under the authority of God.

Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; (17) but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

It was only when man would be submitted to the will of God that man would be alive.

This was a delicate relationship. It was delicate because, man had freedom of choice but man had to volitionally, submit to the authority of God over him. This was a delicate balance, for man had to constantly consider God and say, “I choose to submit to God out of love for Him and because I trust Him”.

Man had to safeguard, protect, nurture this delicate relationship on a continuous basis. Man would enjoy life but it required to surrender and submit to the lordship of Christ. God was faithful to His side of this relationship but man had to fulfil his part, in order to be alive.

When man cherished this delicate relationship with God, man had life. This life of God is the abundant life . This is the life, which the Old Testament prophets referred to as the Shalom of God. Every facet of this life was rich, glorious, abundant, full, complete and wholesome.

God is reconciling man, through Christ, to come back to the Shalom of God.

What did the serpent tell Eve?

Genesis 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.

The devil does not want man to have the abundant life and he told the woman, a lie. The devil tells man, “Don’t worry, you can move out of the lordship of God, you will not die”.

Man and woman were deceived by the lie of the devil, but they made a deliberate choice to go out of lordship to Christ .

Genesis 3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

When they went their own way, they sinned and sin brought death on themselves. Man was cut off from God. Man surely died.

This death of man was being settled on the cross by Jesus.

Thought to ponder

Are you living, today, in a constant, surrendered relationship with Christ?
