05 – 19 Jan 2022 – Crossing over from death to life - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: Ephesians 2:1-3

“Lord Jesus, we thank You that this primary problem of death, that we brought upon ourselves, You took so that we could cross over from death to life. Lord, we need to now live this life, by faith in You, in the enablement of the Holy Spirit. Lord, we desire to be yielded more and more to the Holy Spirit, so that we can live a life that is pleasing to You. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.”

Luke 23:44-45 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (45) Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

Jesus brought us out of death and He has brought us into life.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

All of us have sinned. We have gone away from the glory of God. We sought our own glory (our will) and we rejected God’s glory (God’s will). This is sin and the wage of sin is death. This sin and death have spread to all men.

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

This is the terrible situation in which we have arrived. This is just one side to our ‘bad news'. There is another side and that is, by coming into death, we also got ourselves into the clutches of the devil, who has the power of death.

Hebrews 2:14-15 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, (15) and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Jesus was made as an offering for our bad news.

Isaiah 53:10-11 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin,

This is the love of Jesus, that He is reconciling many of us to God, by justifying us, by His soul, which was made as an offering for our sin and death.

He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. (11) He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

Jesus came in the flesh, identified with us, but lived without sin. He was thus the perfect sacrifice for our sin. In becoming the perfect sacrifice, Jesus destroyed the devil, who has the power of death.

We, therefore, need not fear the enemy. He is destroyed in the lake of fire.

We are living in time, matter and space and so we see the devil active but let us see everything from an eternity perspective. We will then see the fact that the devil is destroyed by Jesus on the cross.

From the state of death, Jesus has brought us to life.

Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, (2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience , (3) among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

We were once part of the community of death. The community of death is the world, which is under the control of the evil one.

When we come to Jesus, we repent of our sin and we receive, by faith, with thanksgiving, what Jesus did for us on the cross. We receive His victory over sin(flesh), the world and the devil. This is the comprehensive victory that Jesus has provided for those who place their trust in Jesus. We thus move from death to life and we must continue to live in an intimate relationship with Jesus, for in Him is life.

Ephesians 2:5-7 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), (6) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (7) that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

This life in Christ is no more about us. We were made alive together with Christ. We were raised up together with Christ, to be rulers together with Him. Together with Christ, we will also reign in the ages, which is to come.

To be one with Jesus is the work of the Holy Spirit. We are in constant communion with Jesus.

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

Belief is a constant experience for the believer in Jesus. We constantly walk by faith. When we are in union with Jesus, we have life.

I Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

Man received life from God when God breathed into the nostrils of man. Man died because of sin but Jesus restores us to life, when we come back to union with Him.

I Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, "THE FIRST MAN ADAM BECAME A LIVING BEING." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

Thought to ponder

Are you in constant union with Jesus, by His Holy Spirit?
