07 – 21 Jan 2022 – Our rootedness in His word - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: II Peter 3:5-7

“Lord Jesus, we thank You that You completed the work that You came to do, in those three hours of darkness. Lord, this work was to reconcile both man and creation to You in the eternal relationship of Your kingdom. We give You all the glory and praise and in Jesus most precious name we pray, Amen.”

Luke 23:44-45 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (45) Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

The three hours of darkness, on the cross, was the time, when Jesus took the entire sin of man, against God, upon Himself. He also took upon Himself the wrath of God, which is the consequence of man’s sin.

All that stood between man and God was settled and paid for at those three hours of darkness. This is the pinnacle moment of the cross.

All that was needed to be done to reconcile man back with God, was now done and completed.

Luke records this by saying, “…the temple was torn in two” . This meant that the way was now opened for man to enter into the presence of God and have fellowship with Him.

Jesus was fully a man and at the same time, He was also fully God. As the Lord completed this great work on the cross. He said, “I thirst”

John 19:28-30 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" (29) Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. (30) So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Luke then records a glorious statement that Jesus uttered from the cross.

Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, " Father, 'INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT .' " Having said this, He breathed His last.

This is the seventh and last word that Jesus spoke from the cross before His Spirit left His body.

We will now consider the fifth and sixth words that Jesus spoke from the cross, which are recorded in the Gospel of John.

What scripture was being fulfilled, when Jesus said, “I thirst”?

Psalms 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. Psalms 69:21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

It is God’s word that holds all things together.

II Peter 3:5-7 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, (6) by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. (7) But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

What took place on the cross was also a part of the word of God, which holds all things together and all things were happening in accordance with scripture.

The Lord had revealed, on several occasions, to the disciples as to His death, burial and resurrection.

Luke 18:31-34 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. (32) For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. (33) They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again." (34) But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

The disciples were not in tune with God’s word and that is why they were taken by surprise at the crucifixion. This is crucial learning for us.

Let us not be like the disciples, who were not conscious of God’s word being fulfilled. Let us be those, who are constantly in harmony with God’s word, in our times. As long as we are rooted in God’s word, we will not be perturbed by what is happening in our circumstances.

Luke 24:44-49 Then He said to them, " These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (45) And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (46) Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, (47) and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (48) And you are witnesses of these things. (49) Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

The instruction for us is to remain rooted in God’s word , for all things take place according to His word.

Thought to ponder

Are you rested in His word?
