The disciples and the Jews were not able to fathom the cross but they were excited and keenly aware of the Messiah establishing His kingdom rule.
We, New Testament believers, to a large extent, have come to the cross, received the forgiveness of our sin but we are not very sure nor are we so eager about the establishing of the kingdom rule of God here on earth. We have relegated the rule of Jesus to a period which would take place after the Lord returns. This, despite praying, _...Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven …_
The Lord reprimanded the disciples for not believing all that the prophets had written concerning Him. What would He do to us? Will He approve of our unwillingness to embrace the life in His kingdom?
_Luke 18:33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again."_
_I Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,_
We have now come to the third part of the core gospel message, which is the resurrection of our Lord.
The resurrection of the Lord is about the birthing of the kingdom of God within us. _Luke 17:21 nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you."_
Peter and John were recalling the Old Testament prophesies and showing to the Jews how Jesus is the Messiah, for whom the Jews were waiting for, to set up His kingdom
_Act 3:17-19 “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. (18) But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. (19) Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,_
Peter and John were calling the Jews to repent for rejecting Jesus, to now turn around and surrender and submit to the lordship of Jesus, for He is the Messiah.
Paul and Barnabas did the same in Antioch. _Act 13:26-30 “Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. (27) For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. (28) And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. (29) Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. (30) But God raised Him from the dead._
Paul goes as so far as to tell the Jews that they were not listening to the voices of the prophets that were being read every Sabbath. Paul connects all the dots for his Jewish audience and then brings them to the place of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
Jesus, through His resurrection, has given us the victory over death that the devil had forced on us. _Hebrews 2:14-15 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, (15) and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage._
Jesus victory over satan was accomplished on the cross. _Colossians 2:13-15 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, (14) having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. (15) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it._
Resurrection, therefore, brought us from death to life. _Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, (2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (3) among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others._
*Thought to ponder*
```It is the life of Christ lived out through us, which makes us witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus and life in His kingdom.```
