24 – 07 Feb 2022 – Sealed our eternal inheritance through His blood - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: Hebrews 9:13-15

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You shed Your blood on the cross. You sealed for us an eternal inheritance. This is the covenant blessing that You provided for us by Your blood. We praise and worship You. In Jesus name, we pray, Amen.”

The death of Jesus on the cross was confirmed by the Roman soldiers.

John 19:34-37 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (35) And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. (36) For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "NOT ONE OF HIS BONES SHALL BE BROKEN." (37) And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."

We saw that at the death of Jesus, none of His bones were broken. The soldiers confirmed the death of Jesus by piercing His side. Blood and water came out when they did so.

John was present when this was done to Jesus. John witnessed and believed. We, therefore, have the basis for us to believe in Jesus.

The prophecy of the piercing of Jesus is in Zechariah. Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

The Jews will grieve for Jesus because they have put Him to death.

What is the medical perspective to the piercing of Jesus? How does it connect with the overarching purpose for which Jesus came on earth?

The following link will be helpful. There are several other reviews, which will give us a good understanding of what took place at that time.

Jesus physically died on the cross and this was confirmed by the action of the soldiers. This is important since there are many critics, who question the death of Jesus on the cross.

The message for us is that the Lamb of God was slain for the sins of the world.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

In eternity, the identity of Jesus is the Lamb of God, who was slain. The blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God who was slain, is the seal for our blessing. Blood had to be shed for the cleansing of sin.

Hebrews 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Jesus has obtained for us eternal salvation through His blood.

Hebrews 9:11-12 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. (12) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

We are now part of the perfect tabernacle, not made with hands. This is where we will spend eternity. This has been provided for us by His blood that was shed for us. When we come by faith, and receive Jesus, we inherit eternal redemption.

This is the new covenant relationship that Jesus has mediated for us by His blood, shed on the cross.

Hebrews 9:13-15 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, (14) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (15) And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The new covenant relationship, established by the blood of Jesus, enables us to move out of our dead works to serve the living God. The first covenant could not provide what we receive through the new covenant relationship. We are now provided with eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 9:24-28 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; (25) not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— (26) He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. (27) And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, (28) so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Christ was offered once to put away sin and bring us to our eternal inheritance.

Thought to ponder

Oh! the blood that drew salvation’s plan…
