25 – 08 Feb 2022 – The stern warning - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: Hebrews 10:28-31

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have sealed us with the covenant eternal inheritance, by Your blood. We give You all the glory and praise and in Jesus' most precious name we pray, Amen.”

The soldiers pierced the side of Jesus, to confirm His death and blood and water came out.

John 19:34-37 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (35) And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. (36) For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "NOT ONE OF HIS BONES SHALL BE BROKEN." (37) And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."

The eternal identity of Jesus is the Lamb that was slain.

Hebrews 10:4-5, 9-10 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. (5) Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU DID NOT DESIRE, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME. … (9) then He said, "BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. (10) By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins. This is why Jesus willingly offered His body and His blood for us.

This was the will of the Father. Jesus, therefore, completed the Father’s will by offering His body and blood as the perfect and final sacrifice for the sins of man. This fulfilment of the Father’s will is how we are sanctified by the blood of Jesus.

Hebrews 10:12-18 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, (13) from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. (14) For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. (15) But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, (16) "THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR HEARTS, AND IN THEIR MINDS I WILL WRITE THEM," (17) then He adds, "THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE." (18) Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

This offering of Jesus, of His body and of His blood, has made Him be seated at the right hand of God. It is from this position of power and authority, His enemies are made His footstool. This is how Jesus has plucked out of the hand of the devil, the deception by which the devil was ruling the world, through man as his slave.

Revelation 6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, (16) and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! (17) For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

This is how the church must see Jesus. He is the Lamb now seated at the right hand of God. From this place of power and authority, He will crush His enemies. The enemies of God will fear the wrath of the Lamb of God.

By the offering of His body and His blood, Jesus has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Jesus has already perfected us before God but at the same time, we are also being sanctified. This seems incongruent but it isn’t. This is the amazing reality of God in the life of a believer in Christ.

This is the essence of the covenant relationship that we have now been brought into by the blood of Jesus. He resides in us and He enables us to live a sanctified life before Him. This is the new covenant by His blood.

I Corinthians 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, " This cup is the new covenant in My blood . This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Understanding all that Jesus has done for us, by His death, we are now being solemnly warned.

Hebrews 10:28-31 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. (29) Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (30) For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. And again, " THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE ." (31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

We cannot take the blood of Jesus for granted and live as we please. We are here to submit our will to the will of Jesus by the enablement of the Holy Spirit. We cannot please God by our flesh but we can please God when we are led by His Holy Spirit.

Thought to ponder

Are you enjoying the new covenant relationship with Jesus?
