โLord Jesus, we thank You that as we study about the burial of Your body, we have much to learn and apply to our lives. We thank You and praise You for Your wonderful ways. In Jesus' most precious name we pray, Amen.โ
Luke 23:50-54 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. (51) He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. (52) This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. (53) Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. (54) That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
We have already seen a few features of the life of Joseph of Arimathea, which we must learn from and apply to our lives. We will consider one more aspect of his life.
He was also awaiting the kingdom of God, just like the others. The Jews, in general, were all waiting for the kingdom of God. There are several passages in the Old Testament, which give vivid descriptions of the kingdom of God on earth. The kingdom of God was also tied to the Messiah, for the Messiah will inaugurate the kingdom of God.
Jesus had come declaring that the kingdom of God had come. He had also announced that He was the Messiah, for whom the Jews had been waiting. The Jews, including the disciples, were not able to comprehend why Jesus was not setting up the kingdom of God.
To be waiting for the kingdom of God meant to be under the lordship of Christ. Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
The kingdom of God requires that we must relinquish allegiance to any previous kingdom, of which we may have been a part, and surrender to the authority of Christ.
Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
The sermon on the mount gives us a wide width of understanding of the application of kingdom values in everyday life. God is calling us to surrender our will to Godโs will, willingly and this is possible only in the enablement of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
It is only the Holy Spirit, who will give us clarity, in all situations, of the will of God, which is His word. The Holy Spirit also enables us to live out the will of God. This is the new covenant relationship.
Let us now begin to look closer into the burial of Jesus. What does it mean for us? John has given us a fair amount of detail as to how the burial of Jesus took place.
John 19:40-42 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. (41) Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. (42) So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
The following application of the burial of Jesus is given for us by Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans.
Romans 6:1-14 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? (2) Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (3) Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? (4) Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (5) For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, (6) knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. (7) For he who has died has been freed from sin. (8) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, (9) knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. (10) For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. (11) Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (12) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. (13) And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. (14) For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Thought to ponder
Baptism, is about being buried with Christ.
