Wed07Jul2021 - *The significance of the Passover meal* - _Luke 22:7-13_ - PREPARING FOR THE PASSOVER MEAL (01) – Bible reading: _I Peter 2:9-10_
The Lord has separated us to Himself, as His own special people, that we may declare His praises to the world. We are here on earth to be both priests and kings and bring the rule of God here on earth.
We are now at _Luke 22:7-13_. We have titled the study of this paragraph as PREPARING FOR THE PASSOVER MEAL. We have completed the study of the previous paragraph, _Luke 22:1-6_ which we had titled as THE HATCHING OF THE PLOT TO KILL JESUS.
_Luke 22:7-9 Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, *when the Passover must be killed*. (8) And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat." (9) So they said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare?"_
_Matthew 26:17 Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" Mark 14:12 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, *when they killed the Passover lamb*, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?"_
The Passover meal, this particular year, for Jesus with His disciples, was becoming significant and everyone could sense a solemnity. They knew that this meal was not going to be like the usual Passover meals that they had celebrated in previous years.
We have already considered the grand design and plan of God, which was centred on Jesus being put to death. Therefore, this Passover meal was crucial.
_Exodus 12:14 ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance._
The Passover meal was the most important meal for the Jews. This meal or feast was to be an everlasting ordinance for the Jews. They were being set apart as a nation. Till then they were slaves but now they were transitioning to becoming a nation for God.
We, as the church have been set apart for God. Once we too were not a people but now we have a clear and definite identity and our identity is the identity of Jesus Christ. It is the banner of Jesus that flies above us, for the world to see.
The Lord expects us to live as a people, who are set apart for Him.
_Exodus 12:17 So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day *I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt*. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance._
As the church, we have been brought out from the prison-house of death to life. _Hebrews 2:14-15 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death *He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil*, (15) and *release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage*._
We have brought out from the world, from the grip of Satan and separated unto God.
_Ephesians 2:1-3 And *you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins*, (2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (3) among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others._
_Exodus 12:22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning._
The Lord redeemed the people of Israel by the blood of the lamb that had no blemish, that they become a nation. The blood of this lamb was to be painted on the doorposts and the lintel of the house. All those who were in this house were covered and protected. This was to be both a personal experience to appropriate and it was also for them to embrace as families.
It is the blood of Jesus that covers us and protects us from the angel of death. Within the community of the people of God, God is calling us as family units to belong to Him. Each family unit, the husband and his wife, with the children, are to be set apart for God.
Even those who are singles and feel that they are not in a family are to be embraced into families within the community of God’s people.
It was an ordinance given to the Israelites that they must welcome strangers into their homes, with the requirement for that person too to come under the blood covering of the Passover lamb.
_Exodus 12:48 And when a stranger dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it._
Family units, within the community of the body of Christ, including those who do not have a family of their own, are to be covered by the blood of the Passover lamb. This is the everlasting ordinance of God.
*Thought to ponder*
Who are the members of the church of Jesus Christ? Those who are covered by the blood of Jesus.
