07 – 17 Feb 2022 – Jesus’ body is manifested in the church - Luke 23:50-56 - THE BURIAL OF JESUS - Bible reading: Acts 2:24-32

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have provided us with a wonderful solution to living victoriously over sin. We give You all the glory and praise and in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”

We are focussing on that time when Jesus had died and it was late in the evening of the preparation day for the Sabbath. All that needed to be done for the burial of Jesus, needed to be done quickly.

Luke 23:54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.

John 19:40-42 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. (41) Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. (42) So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

Joseph and Nicodemus bound the body of Jesus with linen cloth and spices.

The Jews did not practise embalming, and the funeral spices were a way to help minimize unpleasant odours because of the decomposing body. We must remember that the body was laid in a tomb and not buried underground. Using spices to anoint the body of Jesus was to honour Him, which the women intended to do after the Sabbath.

Jesus’ body was laid in Joseph’s tomb and a stone rolled across the entrance to the tomb. Matthew 27:60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.

Now, for the application.

Romans 8:2-4 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

The body experiences decomposition because of sin in the body.

When we sinned, death set in. Though we may be physically alive, we are all in a gradual state of decomposition. After physical death, decomposition of the body is rapid. This is because of the law of sin and death that is at work in us.

To rid us of this core and fundamental problem, Jesus came into our world. This victorious law of the Spirit of life in Christ is made available to us. How did Jesus set us free from the law of sin and death, which was working in man?

(3) For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,

God provided us with the solution by sending His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. Jesus condemned or defeated sin in the flesh.

Jesus had no inherited sin for He was born of a virgin, who conceived by the Holy Spirit. He also did not experience sin, though He was tempted to sin at all points. I John 3:5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. There was no sin in the flesh of Jesus. This is the point that we must grasp.

This victorious body of Jesus is made available to us through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’s body alone did not see corruption. We are now beneficiaries of the body of Jesus, in which there is no sin.

(4) that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

The body of Jesus should have started decomposing after death and after 24 hours the body would be in a terrible state of decomposition. Whereas, what happened to the body of Jesus?

Act 2:24-32 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.

Death could not have any hold on Jesus. Jesus died, yes, but He died to be the Lamb that took the sin of the world.

(25) For David says concerning Him: 'I FORESAW THE LORD ALWAYS BEFORE MY FACE, FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, THAT I MAY NOT BE SHAKEN. (26) THEREFORE MY HEART REJOICED, AND MY TONGUE WAS GLAD; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL REST IN HOPE. (27) FOR YOU WILL NOT LEAVE MY SOUL IN HADES, NOR WILL YOU ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION. (28) YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF JOY IN YOUR PRESENCE.'

Peter, clarifies that David was not prophesying about himself but he was prophesying about Jesus.

(29) "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. (30) Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, (31) he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. (32) This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

The patriarch David died, and his tomb is with us. David’s body went through decomposition but David is prophesying about Jesus that the flesh of Jesus did not see decomposition.

This Jesus, whose body did not see corruption, God has raised up by His Holy Spirit.

The body of Jesus was laid in the tomb after which it was not seen.

Has the body of Jesus disappeared?

No, the body of Jesus is very much visible and is in our midst as His church . We are the body of Jesus, who are manifesting the life that is victorious over sin , just as Jesus was able to live without sin in His flesh.

Thought to ponder

Are you conscious that you are the body of Jesus?
