08 – 18 Feb 2022 – The church must live victoriously over sin - Luke 23:50-56 - THE BURIAL OF JESUS - Bible reading: John 6:55-58

“Lord Jesus, we thank You for this wonderful truth that Your body did not decompose but Your body is now visible and victorious in the church. This victorious life, we live, in the enablement of the Holy Spirit. We praise and worship You. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.”

Luke 23:54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.

John 19:40-42 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. (41) Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. (42) So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The body of Jesus was laid in the tomb after which it was not seen. Did the body of Jesus disappear?

No, the body of Jesus did not see corruption but the body of Jesus is very much visible as His church. We are the body of Jesus, who manifest His life that is victorious over sin. Jesus lived without sin in His flesh and, therefore, His body did not decompose.

Acts 2:31-32 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. (32) This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

We demonstrate the resurrection of Jesus as the church. This is the message of resurrection. The church is the body of Christ, living out the fullness of Christ, in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Paul testifies to this same truth.

Act 13:32-39 And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers. (33) God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' (34) And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE SURE MERCIES OF DAVID.' (35) Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ' YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION .'

This was the glad tidings to the fathers that they would partake of the new covenant relationship with God. A relationship, wherein, God’s people would live victoriously, overcoming sin and live in the fullness of God. This glad tiding was made possible, through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

(36) "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; (37) but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. (38) Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; (39) and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

The church now lives as those who are justified. The Law of Moses could not justify us before God. We, now, as the church, live out the justified life because we live out the body of Jesus by faith, in the enablement of the Holy Spirit.

This body of Jesus, which was not to be found, is now out in the open. The body of Jesus is the church, The body of Jesus has not disappeared. It is very much visible and alive in the church by the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

This is what it is to commune at the table of Christ, isn’t it? We consume the bread by faith, saying that we are the body of Christ. We now live victoriously over sin for the body of Jesus is within us, by faith. It is the Holy Spirit, who brings this truth to reality in us.

I Corinthians 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? (17) For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

Though we are many, we are one body, the body of Christ. We are together living out the victorious life of Christ, through the Holy Spirit.

I Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

The devil does not want the church to know this truth. He tells us that we are justified before God by faith and now we need not worry about living victoriously over sin.

This is what the Lord told us.

John 6:55-58 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. (56) He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. (57) As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. (58) This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever."

Jesus was living because of the Father and in the same way we live because of Jesus. Jesus is the bread, who came down from heaven.

Thought to ponder

The body of Jesus did not see corruption but the body of Jesus is living and victorious in the church.
