God’s word will not pass away. We can, therefore, trust in His word. Circumstances around us are uncertain and there is upheaval everywhere. Yet, we can keep our eyes on the Lord and know that His words will not pass away.
_Luke 21:29-33 Then He spoke to them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. (30) When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. (31) So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. (32) Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. (33) *Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away*._
The Lord is tying up everything to this particular parable of the budding of the fig tree. It seems as though this is the pivotal parable, in the heart of our Lord, and the Lord is emphasising its significance with the certainty of His word.
_Jeremiah 24:4-7 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (5) “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge those who are carried away captive from Judah, whom I have sent out of this place for their own good, into the land of the Chaldeans. (6) For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land; I will build them and not pull them down, and I will plant them and not pluck them up. (7) *Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart*._
The budding of the fig tree represents how the fruitless dead wood of scattered Israel is replaced by fruit on new wood. It is not just about a people drawn back into their own land but a nation that is seeking the Lord.
Right now, as we look at Israel, as a nation, they are not yet seeking the Lord. Their political climate is going through several changes and what we see amongst the people are decadence and paganism. These are the people, who are the representatives of the Holy God, here on earth, but right now they seem to be far removed from their calling.
Though these are the external signs in their society, we must see below the surface and know that many are accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. It is only during these days that those who are seeking the Lord are beginning to grow into a significant number.
_Mark 13:28-31 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: *When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves*, you know that summer is near. (29) So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors! (30) Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. (31) Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away._
The Lord has laid much emphasis on the fulfilling of this particular prophecy by saying, _” Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away”_
_Isaiah 51:4-8 “Listen to Me, My people; And give ear to Me, O My nation: For law will proceed from Me, And I will make My justice rest As a light of the peoples. (5) My righteousness is near, My salvation has gone forth, And My arms will judge the peoples; The coastlands will wait upon Me, And on My arm they will trust. (6) Lift up your eyes to the heavens, And look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, The earth will grow old like a garment, And those who dwell in it will die in like manner; But *My salvation will be forever, And My righteousness will not be abolished*. (7) "Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, You people in whose heart is My law: Do not fear the reproach of men, Nor be afraid of their insults. (8) For the moth will eat them up like a garment, And the worm will eat them like wool; But *My righteousness will be forever, And My salvation from generation to generation*."_
The Lord is encouraging us, His people. He is strengthening us not to fear the criticism and slander of men since His words will not pass away. We need to be rested on His word, though the circumstances seem contrary to God being on His throne.
_Psalms 102:24-27 I said, "O my God, Do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years are throughout all generations. (25) Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. (26) *They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed. (27) But You are the same, And Your years will have no end*._
It is the budding of the fig tree or the spiritual awakening of Israel that we must keep in mind as the key event for the coming of the Lord.
We are at the brink of God’s righteousness and His salvation being fully revealed. Let us, therefore, take heart, watch and pray as signs are being fulfilled and faithfully do the work that He has entrusted each of us.
*Thought to ponder*
```Is there anxiety and fear, gripping you these days, or are you rested on His word?```
