13Jan2020 - *What is salt?* _Luke 14:34-35_ - Bible reading: _II Corinthians 4:6-7_

_Luke 14:34-35 “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? (35) It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men._

We have completed the section on the cost of being a disciple of Jesus and we now move on to the next section, which is about being salt.

What is salt that our Lord is teaching us about?

Salt is Jesus, Himself. Just as the light is Jesus, salt too is Jesus.

_II Corinthians 4:6-7 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us._ Jesus is the salt in us and we hold this treasure, which is Jesus, in our earthen vessels, so that the excellence of the power is of God and not of us. _Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is *Christ in you*, the hope of glory._

Salt, as a chemical compound is very stable and cannot be easily broken down. So, what did Jesus mean, when He said, “…if the salt loses its flavour…”? Salt itself cannot be broken down, just Christ cannot be broken down. Yet, if we are not operating our lives out of Christ, and if Christ is not operating out of us, then we are as salt that has lost its flavour.

The plan that God has for us is that our lives must be fully operational out of Christ. _Ephesians 1:18-23 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (19) and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (20) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all._

God has made Jesus to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Christ. The church, therefore, must be full of Jesus and the fullness of Jesus must be experienced through the church. Jesus and the church cannot be separated, as a principle, but the church can choose to function without Christ. If the church does so, it is no more, church, and becomes fit only to be trampled underfoot by men.

*Thought to ponder*

```Luke 12:32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.```
