Luke 20 41-47 Christ, the Son of David 01 Luke 20 41-47 The everlasting kingdom of David
09Apr2021 - *The everlasting kingdom of David* - _Luke 20:41-47_ - CHRIST, THE SON OF DAVID (1) – Bible reading: _Isaiah 9:6-7_
We have completed the study of God who is living, as the Lord countered the question raised by the Sadducees. The Lord continues to confront the issue of the self in the heart of man and He is making everyone understand the ways of God. The Lord is calling us to a life of surrender to the lordship to Christ.
It is now the Lord who is asking the question as He continues to address the same issue of the heart, which is of the self.
*Luke 20:45-47 Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, (46) “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, (47) who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."*
We see here that the Lord is showcasing how the majority of the religious leaders were given to desiring outward appearances and in receiving praise from people.
He was warning the disciples not to fall into the outward way of life of the religious leaders. This is the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees that Jesus cautioned about in other places, as well. He was breaking this evil way of life and calling people to *seek for deeper understanding and a closer and more intimate walk with Him*.
What were the religious leaders wanting in life? They wanted recognition, importance and significance from people. The perception of people about them was very important to these leaders and they sought to impress people. This was their agenda in life. They were promoting themselves in different ways.
Friends, let us pause here for a moment, and take a look into our own hearts. What do you see in your heart? Are you seeking the commendation of people? Is the opinion of people very important to you? Are you offended and worried if you do not get recognition and admiration from people? Is your life more of an outward show?
If the Holy Spirit is convicting you, please repent and seek the forgiveness of God for this superficiality and in His enablement, seek for a deep relationship with Christ.
The question that the Lord was raising was to challenge the thinking of the people and wanting people to desire for the deeper things of God rather than be caught up with an outward show.
*Luke 20:41-44 And He said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? (42) Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, " SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, (43) TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL."' (44) Therefore David calls Him 'LORD'; how is He then his Son?"*
The Scribes and teachers of the law considered the Christ, to be the Son of David. They were immersed into prophesy that spoke of the Messiah, who would come and set up His throne and His kingdom would be the continuation of the reign of David. They were longing and waiting for the arrival of the Christ to set up the Davidic kingdom, which is an everlasting kingdom.
_Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And *the government will be upon His shoulder*. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (7) *Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever*. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this._
The Jews were fascinated with this and several other similar passages that they held on to, tenaciously. Their hope was that the Christ would set up His kingdom, a continuation of the reign of David, which will be an everlasting kingdom.
_Psalm 89:35-37 Once I have sworn by My holiness; *I will not lie to David: (36) His seed shall endure forever*, And his throne as the sun before Me; (37) It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky." Selah_
For the Jews this was exciting.
_Isaiah 11:1-5 There shall come forth *a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots*. (2) The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. (3) His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; (4) But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. (5) Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist._
A description of the reign of Christ the Son of David is given here, yet David himself called Him as, Lord.
The Lord was challenging His disciples and others who were listening to Him, to delve deep into knowing Him, the Christ, the Son of David.
*Thought to ponder*
Do the deeper things of God intrigue you or do you become restless when the matters of eternity are deliberated?
